Our Vedic tradition
The Glory of the Vedas is that they are of immeasurable value as much for their sound as for their verbal content. While the energising sound has its own creative power, the words are notable for the exalted character of the meaning they convey. South India has been the refuge and home of Vedic and Sastraic learning for several centuries. The Tamil Brahmana Agraharams where the oral traditions of the Veda were preserved through the Pathasalas, in a broader sense, were open universities. Palakkad with its several agraharams like its counterparts in Tamil Nadu had produced undaunted reciters of the Veda and renowned scholars in Sastras during the last century.
Veda Pathasala...Why?
Lamenting over the decline of Vedic studies or tracing the cause of the present condition is of no use. We continue the Vedic tradition with all pride and so preservation of the mantra-dhvani and utilizing it for the performance of the Srauta and Smarta rituals is the need of the hour. Realizing the impending danger of extinction, of the unbroken oral tradition of the Vedas in this part of Kerala, the late Dr.C.R Swaminathan, in order to create an awareness about the situation, established a Veda Pathasala under the banner of Veda Rakshana Samithi at Chathapuram Agraharam in Kalpathi, Palakkad in the year 1996 with the blessings of the Sankaracharyas of Kanchi and Sringeri.
